Retainers

Once we unveil your beautiful new smile, the most important part of orthodontic treatment is just beginning: the retention phase. Dr Darsh Patel provides all our patients with a custom retainer to help them keep their stunning smile results.

Why do I have to wear a retainer?

A retainer will help your teeth stabilise in their new post-treatment positions. If you don’t wear a retainer after orthodontic treatment, your teeth will want to shift back into their original spots, so it’s important to wear your retainer to maintain the results you worked so hard for!

We recommend you wear your retainers for a minimum of one year; however, for best results, you should utilise them throughout your lifetime.

Types of retainers

At SmartDontics®, we offer two kinds of custom retainers: removable retainers and fixed retainers.

Removable retainers

Removable retainers look a bit like Angel Aligners. They sit over your top and bottom teeth, and are completely clear. You will start with full-time wear, and then progress to nighttime-only wear once your teeth have had time to settle.

Fixed retainers

A fixed retainer is a thin wire attached to the back surface of your teeth. You don’t need to worry about losing this kind of retainer, but you do have to pay special attention to cleaning around it. Our team can show you the best techniques for keeping your retainer clean.

How to care for your retainer

You want your retainer to last you as long as possible, so if you have a removable retainer, you have a few extra things to consider:

  • Remove your retainer for meals and regular oral hygiene
  • Always keep your retainer in its case when removed
  • Don’t put your retainer in a napkin (or it could end up in the bin)
  • When you brush your teeth, brush your retainer with a soft-bristled toothbrush before putting it back in
  • Use retainer/denture cleaners as needed for a deep clean
  • Keep your retainer away from pets and excessive heat (no washing machines!)
  • Alert our team as soon as possible if your retainer is lost or damaged
